Claymates is a welcoming ceramics studio in Cowaramup, in the heart of the Margaret River region, offering hand-building pottery classes,
workshops, private events, and open studio access.

Founded by ceramic artist Kate Lethlean, the studio also houses a gallery and shop showcasing her contemporary porcelain tableware,
decorative objects, and bespoke dinner services—designed for stylish interiors, everyday use, and elegant entertaining.

About Us

Claymates is a ceramics studio and gallery in Cowaramup, at the heart of the Margaret River region, between Margaret River and Dunsborough. We welcome everyone—from complete beginners to experienced makers.

Alongside classes and workshops, Claymates is the home of ceramic artist Kate Lethlean’s porcelain practice. Kate’s refined tableware and decorative objects are subtle, tactile pieces intended to be collected, lived with, and built upon over time.

We call our gallery the Herbarium, drawing on the traditional meaning of the word—a collection that preserves plant forms at a moment in time. In Kate’s work, flowers, foliage, and garden plants are pressed, cast, and recorded in clay and porcelain, transforming fleeting botanical detail into functional and sculptural pieces for everyday use.

Claymates also provides tailored private sessions, specialist intensives, and membership access. All classes are taught in stoneware and led by Kate, whose studio practice informs the approach to hand-building, surface detail, and functional form shared throughout the studio.

Casting the Coast Ceramics Class

Such a cool way to spend a couple of hours. The kids got stuck in with their pet bowls and actually stayed focused the whole time — impressive! The studio had everything we needed and more and it felt like a proper creative space without being intimidating.

Personalised Pet Bowl Class Workshop

I’ve always wanted to try pottery and my friends surprised me with a hens day at Claymates. Making ring dishes to celebrate my wedding with my closest friends was such a fun way to spend the day. The studio was beautiful, and the flowers and morning tea made it feel really special. We had such a happy afternoon together.

Galentine’s Day Ring Dish Workshop

We booked Claymates for a hens day and it was honestly perfect. There were 12 of us and the ring dish workshop was such a great way to celebrate the wedding. We brought wine, Kate gave our bride beautiful flowers, and the morning tea was delicious! We all made something we love — such a great alternative to the usual hens activities.

Private Ceramics Classes & Events | Margaret River Hand-Building Studio

I tried ceramics for the first time while on holiday in Margaret River and absolutely loved it. It was really fun and a bit harder than I expected. Kate was really helpful and it felt easy to have a go, even as a total beginner. Such a great holiday experience — and I made a piece I actually want to keep.
